A Canadian trucker was sentenced Thursday to two years in federal prison after being caught at the border with 240 pounds of marijuana destined for Long Island.
Harjinder Dhugga of Brampton, Ontario, had pleaded guilty at federal court in Buffalo.
Prosecutors said border officers discovered the 10 boxes of marijuana in November 2009 while inspecting Dhugga’s cargo—a load of paper towels—at the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge in western New York.
Officers removed the marijuana, followed the truck into New York and arrested Dhugga as he drove toward LI to drop it off.
The U.S. Attorney for the Western District said commercial truck drivers are routinely caught trying to sneak drugs into the United States.
