Ever since it became public that iPhones and iPads track, log and store users’ locations, lawmakers have been asking Apple for an explanation.
Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., wrote a letter to Apple CEO Steve Jobs asking for a response to what he calls “serious privacy concerns.” Franken is the chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology and the Law.
British researchers said Wednesday that the devices log where the user has been in unencrypted files that is stored on the device and backed up during synchronization and saved on the owner’s computer as well. Since the information is stored in an unencrypted form that could easily be accessed by a hacker, many are alarmed and concerned.
Location data is useful for mobile phone companies for advertising reasons-they can tell the advertisers where their clients live and places they frequent.
