Three boaters on a voyage from Maine were rescued when their 50-foot sailboat was grounded off Fire Island on Thursday afternoon, Suffolk County police said.
A Marine Bureau officer threw the distressed boaters a life ring and pulled them to safety amid 4 to 5 foot high waves between Saltaire and Fair Harbor at 1 p.m. None of the three were injured.
The captain of the boat was identified as 19-year-old Bertil Haney of Harrington, Maine. His two passengers included fellow Maine residents Daniel Bolander and Victoria Parsons, both 20.
