Suffolk County police officers are resuming the search for the New Jersey prostitute who was last seen in Oak Beach near where the remains of four online escorts were found in December.

A police spokeswoman said Tuesday that officers were “continuing to search for evidence in the missing persons case of Shannan Gilbert.”

A K-9 officer and his dog were searching for the 24-year-old Jersey City woman when they happened upon the skeletal remains on one woman in Gilgo Beach. Police found three more bodies nearby two days later.

Gilbert’s body was quickly ruled out as among the remains. She was last seen screaming and running into the brush May 1, 2010 after meeting a client about three miles east of where the bodies were found.

Helicopters and dogs were assisting with the search on the barrier beach east of Jones Beach.

Police theorize a serial killer may have been responsible for the deaths. All four women were in their 20s.

No suspects have been identified in the deaths of the women.

The four victims were identified as:

Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, of Norwich, Conn., last seen on July 9, 2007 in Manhattan.

Melissa Barthelemy, 24, last seen on July 12, 2009 in her hometown, the Bronx.

Megan Waterman, 22, of Portland, Maine, last seen at a Hauppauge hotel on June 6, 2010.

Amber Lynn Costello, 27, last seen on Sept. 2, 2010 in her hometown, North Babylon. She was never reported missing.
