A former assistant principal at Sewanhaka High School has been accused of stealing $113,000 from the union he worked for.
Gerald Waldman was arrested Friday morning and pleaded not guilty to charges of grand larceny and official misconduct.
Nassau County prosecutors said the 59-year-old Huntington man was the treasurer of the Sewanhaka School District Department Chairperson’s Association between November 2004 and May 2010 and used his access to union bank accounts to to steal more than $113,000 by writing 136 checks to cash and one to himself.
Waldman allegedly used the cash was used to pay his credit card bills and personal expenses.
Waldman’s attorney, Jeffrey Waller, said there is nothing to hide, and said his client has been paying back the money over six years, that he was using for his children’s college tuition.
Waller said his client paid back all but $1,000, the remainer of which will be repaid soon.
He said his client has never been in trouble and that he’s “concerned about him.”
Waldman resigned last summer.
He was released without bail and is due back in court March 2. If convicted he faces up to 15 years in prison.
