Portledge School and the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center are co-sponsoring the Create Something Great Recycled Sculpture Contest, which encourages students in Kindergarten through sixth grade to build sculptures designed around the theme of animals, birds and reptiles made out of recycled and/or reusable materials.
This contest is a hands-on learning experience for budding young artists to pique their curiosity about art, wildlife and environmental issues. Children compete in three categories: Kindergarten – First grade; Second – Third grades; and Fourth – Sixth grades.
Awards will be given within each assigned age category based on overall aesthetic value and creative use of recycled materials. Prizes for each category include: first place $100 gift certificate for arts & crafts supplies, second place $50 gift certificate for arts & crafts supplies, and third place $25 gift certificate for arts & crafts supplies.

Registration forms must be received by Thursday, March 17, 2011. Sculptures must be hand delivered to the Portledge Lower School main office on Thursday, April 7 or Friday, April 8 between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
All sculptures will be on display and award winners will be announced during a special art reception to be held on Saturday, April 9th from 1:30p.m. – 3:30 p.m. at Portledge Lower School. All participants in attendance will receive a certificate. Following the reception with participants and their families, a professional from the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center will give a presentation on Raptors: Birds of Prey, including live animals from the sanctuary in Oyster Bay. Afterwards, award winning sculptures will be transported to the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center for a second art display April 11th – April 16th, open to the public noon – 4 p.m.
