Horseback riding is no longer limited to the summer months-at Big River Barn in Old Westbury, winter riding is all the rage!
“The horses love the snow! They have a lot of fun in it,” Janet of Big River Barn says.
As the sun comes up and snowflakes make their way to the woods’ floor, horses and their riders at Big River Barn set out for a serene stroll through the snowy trails of Long Island.
Big River Barn, a small barn located in Old Westbury, offers a unique winter experience for riders of all levels; a trip through an amazing trail system that spans through the old world towns of Old Westbury, Brookville and Muttontown on the barn’s own private horses.
“There’s actually a really amazing extensive trail system of woods and fields, right in the middle of Nassau County. We can ride for hours,” says Janet.
The spectacular experience offers riders a 1 ¼ hour travel through a virtually unknown trail system that goes through the Gatsby-inspired SUNY Old Westbury campus and through the beautiful Muttontown Preserve.
Janet says, “It’s a miracle that this trail system exists here.”
First time riders and returning riders make a beeline for the tempting winter trails to trot and canter through the snow ridden woods and fields, maybe even taking a few jumps in between.
Wondering how riders stay warm in the wintertime? Big River Barn says it’s easy-all you need to remember is to wear your warmest winter gear. And don’t worry about the horses, Janet assures the horses are kept warm and toasty; “horses grow long thick winter coats that keep them warm in the winter.”
The ride costs $100 per person. For more information on this wonderful winter experience visit, www.BigRiverBarn.com.
