President Barack Obama recently offered his support to Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles, the organization that has given Vick a second chance in the NFL. But not everyone is on board with the feel-good story.
Tucker Carlson, a political news correspondent and commentator for FOX News, said Tuesday on FOX News that he thinks Michael Vick should have been executed for his role in an illegal dog-fighting ring, which included the killing of the animals.
“Now, I’m a Christian,” Carlson said. “I’ve made mistakes myself, I believe fervently in second chances. But Michael Vick killed dogs, and he did in a heartless and cruel way. And I think, personally, he should’ve been executed for that. He wasn’t, but the idea that the President of the United States would be getting behind someone who murdered dogs?”
The White House confirmed that Obama spoke with Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie recently to discuss the use of alternative energy at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, at which time the subject of Vick came up. According to the White House, Obama reiterated that he condemns Vick’s crimes but believes that Vick, like other convicted criminals, should have the opportunity to contribute to society and lead normal lives upon their release from prison.
