The combination of extremely low temperatures and light snowfall has caused a slew of problems for Long Island commuters.
According to the National Weather Service up to 2 inches of snow has fallen in various parts of the region. The current temperature at Farmingdale Republic Airport is 20 degrees, with a wind chill of 7 degrees. This has caused icy roads and numerous accidents throughout the morning.
The Long Island Railroad had delays on several lines earlier in the morning, but is currently running on schedule. The NWS advised drivers “to be prepared for very icy conditions on untreated surfaces” and warned them of the possibility of black ice.
Meteorologists predict that snow showers are likely to continue throughout the day, with accumulation of less than a half inch possible. Tonight there will be a slight chance of snow showers before 10 p.m., and later possible flurries.
