It depends on your definition (which I guess speaks to Euronymous’ point), but by the sonic (rather than thematic) criteria which I personally ascribe to black metal, they fit *that* label better than they do any other. (For what it’s worth, the term “dark metal” has exactly zero value to me as a descriptor.) They venture deep into prog and post-rock territory with elements of folk used for texture, but to my ear, the basis of this music is quite plainly black metal. I may have overstated that point in this review, but in trying to untangle my own thoughts on the music, that’s where I found myself.

I do see your point, and I guess you have explained yourself quiet well. But I have been trying to convince myself of your second paragraph and I can’t see to understand why Agalloch is a black metal band…

No matter how malleable I try to be about that, they just don’t seem to fit the genre in any way.
