Fair points, guys.

My thought was, when these sort of exchanges with fans have generally been a symptom of dysfunction within the organization, why not try to change that identity a bit and distance themselves? But I can see it working in their favor IF they handle it well. That remains to be seen.

I disagree. In fact, I said in other forums after the first e-mail that the Mets should go a step further: Announce to the fans in an e-mail who the next GM will be. Let THAT be the announcement (because it would get back to a sportswriter who would tweet it within minutes), then follow up with the official release. Because of the waywardness and sometimes Animal House-like shenanigans of recent years with the Mets, I think they need to have more of this kind of direct communication with the fans. Besides, the media tend to spin everything their own way anyway.

I’m having difficulty locating your argument here. Leaving aside the issue of how you think a major-league organization can’t simultaneously write/issue an e-mail to the fans and concentrate on other decision-making… how exactly do an end-of-season press conference and two e-mailed releases announcing/confirming their GM candidates compare to a late-night Comic Sans rant about “betrayal,” or equate to obeying ‘FAN whim regarding management hires/team construction?

And if you pine for the Yankee brand of no-bags-allowed, neighborhood-trampling, screw-you-pay-me brand of fan- and community-relations, then by all means, try on a navy hat, Captain Hysterical. I can’t say they’ll be glad to have you, but I’m sure they’ll take your money.

Do you really think issuing a public statement of two paragrahs or so keeps a team from “doing the work” of hiring new managerial personnel? Really?

Do you really think Francisco Rodriguez punching his father-in-law has anything to do with the Mets’ fan relations? Really?

They said “Thanks for writing.” It took time and caring for folks to write and thanking them is a nice response. In no way did the team say they would run the team according to what they read or even that they did, in fact read anything. To imply otherwise is to engage in hysteria.
