Columbus Day isn’t the only holiday that will be celebrated on Oct. 11, 2010. It is also National Coming Out day, a day that promotes discussion and awareness of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people.
National Coming Out Day has been observed every year on Oct. 11 since 1987. For many, this year has more meaning, given the recent suicide of Rutgers University student Tyler Clementi, who killed himself after his roommate secretly taped him while he was engaged in sexual acts with another man and broadcasted it over the internet.
The holiday focuses on helping GLBT individuals come out, especially younger generations who often face bullying from their peers. Workshops, rallies and other events are also held. For a list of events happening in your area, visit http://www.hrc.org/ncod/.
