Whenever the government gets involved in these issues, the inevitable result is an artificial suppression of housing prices, a loading of such developments into only a few towns and the creation of towns which have been earmarked to be "affordable".

The only way to approach this issue is for the government to govern.

The county and townships need to create a system of housing construction permits that are divided to create pools of housing in each class of housing, affordable, middle and upper. The largest number of permits to go to affordable units. somewhat less to middle units and the least to largest units.

Secondarily, most of the affordable unit permits need to be made specific to those towns and villages which currently have the little or no affordable housing. In this way the burdens of affordable housing will be distributed across Long Island.

The current system places all of the affordable housing burden on perhaps a dozen towns across Long Island, essentially making these towns permanently "lower class" communities.

All towns and villages on Long Island must have proportionally equal amounts of affordable, medium and high cost properties. Allowing some towns to be all of one type of housing makes it necessary for other towns to be all affordable housing.

It is about time Long Island government began governing in the best interests of all Long Island residents, not just those with the most "shekels" jingling in their pockets.

If government insists on catering to the whims of those with wealth, to the exclusion of all citizens; the inevitable result will be war.

When I see big afforable housing complexes up and running in towns like Southampton and Dix Hills, I'll know government is doing its job.

Placing all the burden on just a few towns only creates permanent ghettos.
