Verizon Wireless will likely be paying up to $90 million total in refunds to customers for accidental data charges made over the last few years.
After receiving complaints from Verizon customers, the Federal Communications Commission confronted Verizon concerning the small data charges that were being added to the bills of customers who hadn’t signed up for a data plan. It turns out something in the software allowed data/Web access to be unknowingly initiated by the touch of a button.
15 million customers were affected.
Verizon released a statement this morning that they will refund most of these customers with a $2 to $6 credit on their upcoming bills. Any affected customers who no longer have a Verizon plan will receive refund checks in the mail.
The FCC said they are pleased with the refund, and are continuing their investigations of faulty wireless charges.
