Fairly or not, the late Layne Staley was always considered the face of Alice in Chains despite the fact that guitarist Jerry Cantrell co-founded the band with Staley back in 1987. With William DuVall, the former lead singer of Atlanta outfit Comes With The Fall filling in Staley’s slot, AIC released Black Gives Way to Blue, its first album of new material in 14 years. Far from being a pale replica of its former self, this latest incarnation of Alice in Chains is instead a return to the band’s roots and with this surprisingly solid batch of songs, is a worthy continuation of what Staley and Cantrell started out with back in 1987.
