Well doesn't sound like nothing to be nostalgic about, here in Sweden BTW the movie/cinema business have never gone better, with higher tickets sales then ever before, earning more money then ever before. Sure still video rental stores have been closing down, but dvd sales have never been higher. There's no decent streaming services thanks to oligopolys that have destroyed the possibility of distributing movies, and illegal download have never been higher.

But you know what, the film and even books business have never been hit as the music industry which peaked maybe in the 80's and suffered the death of the single long before the digital revolution. Sweden's problem is that we can't acquire the rights to streaming the material. Simply services topping out at 2000 movies and lots of porn aren't going to get any traction, and it's just silly when your services has 50 000 titles. That's more then our local lovefilm subsidiary carries by mail (ala netflix business plan).

But video rental has also been replaced by the gas stations here. Which actually means that while traditional rental outlets have closed down, we have more places to rent (and buy) films then every before. But at the same time we have more TV-channels then ever before (Only having two state channels 25 years ago). So watching movies are bound to change by all that watching TV. Hours and hours more.

I don't think the death of the theater is here, however they would have to think about what experience they give to the visitors/movie goers.

But watching television shows will never compete with theaters. But it's there I think streaming services does most good.

But how does a streaming movie night differ from a DVD or VHS (not that todays kids know what it is) movie night? It's the same kind of competition they have had a long time. Now movie addicts don't need to spend their paychecks renting 15 movies a time at the video store though.

To be fair I mostly watch TV shows now days, 9-11 years ago I would essentially watch more movies then today (and more TV-ads) even though I can watch whatever whenever. The reason I don't go to the theaters is mostly cultural and because I never got the habit of it, and there's no good theater locally. You have to make it an event together with your friends, but you kinda make other plans when that happens then to go see a film at the theater, (and how would you orchestrate that so you get to see to movie you like? When it's showing for just a few days), and being a bit anti social it's not so much the experience of going out to see a movie that makes it good or interesting, and travel to another city to see a film is a hassle. Yet Cinemas here have never brought in more money. So I guess other still makes it a habit going out to see movies. I wish there where game arcades around though. But that never got a hold here outside the 2 main amusement parks of the country. Those places you don't visit very often. And where you have to try out the new rides thanks to that leaving no time to play video games any way :)

I'm however thankful to all that advertising of the movies at the cinema, how would one otherwise here of all the films. Could take quite a while to here it from other sources.
