Already have your mind set on putting a swimming pool in the backyard with your end-of-year bonus? Be sure to get the proper permits, because even with a cover on it, someone is always watching.
In this case, the someone is the Town of Riverhead, which is using Google Earth to locate pools belonging to residents who didn’t apply for permits first.
So far, the town’s use of the free program has resulted in around 250 owners being called out for not having the appropriate permits.
Those owners were given two choices: pay $300 for the permit or face fines. The overwhelming majority paid up, netting the town approximately $75,000.
