It's way past time for Long Island to start changing with the times. Most of Nassay County is not a 'peaceful quiet suburb of New York City' and hasn't been for decades.

Infrastructure projects mean jobs for our dwindling middle class. Jobs for people supporting their families, paying their taxes and shopping at their local stores.

But money talks and politics rule here in the Burbs.

America is at it's best when it's building something. Time for Long Island to be at it's best and put the Lighthouse Project into a reality.

Excellent article. I would like to know how much the US Government has paid to clean up the waterfront of Glen Cove. I would imagine hundreds of millions of dollars, mostly to legal fees. Another reason why nothing gets done is that the same politicians feed out of a lifettime trough. I am sure Pat Halpin is a nice guy but how many boards and consulting jobs is he feeding from? The same of D'amato. Great article and good research. The best point of the article. If you can't build a rest stop, how are you going to build a bridge? Lets dig up Robert Moses, he would still be more productive than todays hacks.

Excellent article. I thought it very even-handed in its treatment of the pros and cons of development and the portrayal of Robert Moses and other developers.

Love the imagination of the "Build a Better Burb" team.

I agree with the replant-the-trees-and-call-it-a-day crowd. Restoring the Hempstead Plains would be a better use of the space than a canal (we're an island, for crying out loud -- there's water all around us, we don't need to build lameass water features).

The restoration of the plains would also be a great way to graze the animals we eat. You could know for sure that your beef was organic.

i agree with right to arm - the island is already overbuilt. but if there is an interest in getting these grandiose projects going, the problems facing LI have to be solved.
things like the high cost of living, outrageous taxes, pathetic transportation systems and the cost of businesses, large and small, to do business, have been with us and getting worse for the last 20 years.
it should be apparent to the developers that the flight of corporate entities and the closely following "brain drain" , if not repaired, will cause their towers of concrete and steel to sit empty after completion, monuments to a buid and run philosophy. if thats what they're interested in doing they should be stopped. to make these projects viable requires jobs that allow residents to afford to live here.
but i prefer the island to be more rural than having 60 story buildings and artificial canals to be constructed. i'll take my type of beauty, as some of it still is .....natural.

I think the Lighthouse project as proposed under the Suozzi administration would have been a big waste of money and land. Ed Mangano's vision of a casino next to a new coliseum is a much better idea. Nassau needs entertainment venues, not another shopping center. Not only would a casino generate much needed revenue for the county, but residual business would spring up and the existing ones along Hempstead Turnpike would once again flourish. Keep pushing for the casino Ed.

Where is it written that progress can only be made by constatnly, endlessly building and building and building?

Long Island has to decide what it wants to be, either a peaceful quiet suburb of New York City or a endless ever growing city-like megopolis of its own.

In my opinion, Long Island is already mcuh too over-developed.
