Unfortunately, anyone in the Sachem School district can tell you that one particular family mentioned in this article is just crazy. No one wants to get involved with this family, not because they are victims, but because the parents are EXTREMELY litigious. They will sue you if you LOOK at them funny. Just ask around. I have seen good kids be thrown under the bus and be labeled "bullies" by this particular family. Oh and they are available for speaking engagements if you would like to pay them to hear them speak on the subject. They often cast the first stone. Sad, really. Because there are VERY REAL, very serious bullying issues that go unresolved while this family steals the limelight.

Folks, it boils down to education. Lets face it.....our children are sick and they are sick because they are not being taught empathy and other basic needs learned early in life. As a result, we are raising a society of sociopaths and psychopaths. Or, in the case of the victims, they are on medication as they developed depression, PTSD, social anxiety and other problems.

Get bullies in therapy ASAP. THEY are the ones with the psychological issues. It starts with THEM. Victims need it also. If a child is as young as seven, there is still time to get them out of this behavior. Deal with what is really going on here.......

As for Phoebe Prince, it was this abuse that caused her to snap. Some are trying to say not so but it is. I know from experience and a lifetime of this. I know what I am talking about.

Thanks also for calling this abuse. It IS abuse; Peer Abuse! Have a good day......

Take Care,
Elizabeth

Although I agree "the system" should be able to handle these things, I wonder what the parents of these bullied kids have been doing all this time and what the parents of the bullies have been doing.

Kids are mirrors of their parents and environment. Bullying parents raise bullying kids who need to put somebody else down to feel good. Pushover parents raise bullied kids.

By building kids' self confidence and supporting their emotional needs with quality attention, a balanced diet and room for expression parents on both sides can stop bullying. The bullied kids can learn a martial art, the bullies can learn meditation. It's so easy with the right focus, it's easier than blaming the school and going to the press...

Excellent and comprehensive article! While it takes many forms, we can all agree that peer abuse is a spiraling problem. we can probably also agree that there are many reasons why our culture has become crueler with each passing year. What we need to agree on is the fact that the "solution" isn't one solution at all. We each contribute to the Culture of Cruelty through what we do and what we fail to do. Stands to reason that each of us (student, parent, educator, administrator, counselor, youth leader) has the power to make different choices, moment by moment. Choices that reduce aggressive, anti-social behavior by supporting a Culture of Respect.

I think the school should really recognize this kind of behavior. All schools should have a system in place about bullying and helping stop it. Teachers should also recognize when the child is being picked on. Schools aren't doing as much as they can to prevent bullying, We all know that bullying does start from a young age for some people and doesn't stop until they are out of school... if schools did more, then those victims wouldn't have to suffer from bullies.Cyberbullying is bullying in general, and once we stop bullying , cyberbullying will be completely wiped out

This is very sad but in reality, is an issue that happens more often every day than it should. Our organization deals with these every day where the cries from parents and children in the system as they go through the abuse, and the schools push it under the carpet so as not to tarnish their good name is increasing. Some parents are even being banned from schools because they are reporting the issues happening in the school and to their children.

We have a new case that the parent was prohibited from coming into the school, the child was removed from the school by the parents because they were not satisfied with how the school leaders handled the issues. The parents were reposted to their jobs as being abusive and violent towards the school leaders when they came in to address the issues. Now the parent is under review and possible disciplinary actions at her job which is a school safety officer at another school.

Now if we have issues like these happening in our schools and school leaders are handling it this way, we’re not only going to see bullying issues arise but more violence as parent involvement is now on a frustration and anger level. Some parents are now going into the schools to have physical engagement with the children who bully/abuse/taunt their children. This is a serious state of affair with these issues and we are not proactively or seriously looking into the real world impacts and effects of them. Why wait for more lives to be lost?

I support Suffolk County Legis. Jon Cooper’s call for more legislatures to combat these issues, I would say that we don’t need more laws or legislations, we need more action and engagement from what is already in place and can work if we have support from all angles. Having more inactive laws and legislations will not address the issues. The most important elements that need to be brought to light is the need for convergence of us as a people in addressing this.

Having more legislation, laws, task force and resources and not using them effectively is a band aid fix on the issue. We need more community involvement, more parents stepping up and being proactive in dealing with the issues. This is not an issue that is limited to the schools; it is a societal problem that proliferates through every aspect of our society and must be dealt with and by the people. So I would ask Suffolk County Legis. Jon Cooper to look at other organizations/groups that are already doing this work in the field and helping them to work with the Long Island communities in addressing the issues.

We already have Task Forces and other resources that are available to help and expend in these areas, let us network and collaborate instead of trying to start something new or reinventing the wheel. Let us work together as a people by sharing our experiences, lessons learnt and resources to be more effective. I welcome any collaboration on this initiative.

Thank you and have a great day.

The Testimony from the child Advocate and school watchdog Mr.George Deabold hits the nail on the head, if teachers and school administrators fail to adress child safety issues and put children in harms way then its only right that they should have to pay a fine, gon to jail or be fired.Coopers bill for school acountability was withdrawn only due to the fact that cooper bent over and gave in to the pressure from the teachers, administrators and the teachers union.(*The following testimony was taken & transcribed by

There is another gentleman. Please come forward and identify yourself.
MR. DEABOLD:
George Deabold, founder and Chairman of School Watch. I would really implore you all to pass this
bill. This is long overdue. You have to have teacher accountability. Too many teachers and
administrators are turning their backs and letting child safety issues fall to the wayside. Just look at
the papers, the issues that are happening all over the country. It is growing. As students get
access to other students, increase in technology brings them closer together which leads to more
confrontation and more bullying. I would ask that you pass this bill, levy some kind of fine against
administrators that turn a blind eye to children safety issues. Thank you very much.

This should be addressed firstly by the schools, secondly by the police, as I see now, both have failed. What is left to these kids to do? Buy a weapon (not smart), Join a Gang (not smart), Run Away from the problem (not smart). It makes me sick you leave these kids no other option... Let`s remember that things can escalate out of control when dealt with by parents, friends who might beat some sense in the bullies. Police and school authorities, DO YOUR F***** JOB!!!

Tone,

You sound like an infant. I usually try not to talk to infants, but, since you have sympathy for me "right there", I should let you know that I have your mother "right here". She should be home in time to tuck you in, and read you a bedtime story.

Kids nowadays are such hostile, spoiled little douchebags. They're raised in a slimy politically correct and phony affluent culture which constantly tells them how special, precious, and simply wonderful they are. I think our very culture makes these little jerks the angry, narcissistic, and abusive people they are. Bullying always went on in schools, but the stuff you read about these days is just mind boggling. Kids these days have absolutely no idea how to deal with any sort of adversity at all. They have no empathy or respect for the rights of others, and they're not even equipped to get through life without threatening and assaulting other people the minute they get the slightest bit frustrated.
