ORLANDO, Fla. — A SeaWorld Orlando killer whale died from labor complications, say officials.
The 20-year-old orca, named Taima, died Sunday.
Taima’s delivery was made difficult by her fetus’ abnormal position, park officials say. Veterinarians endeavored to assist Taima but the birth’s complications were too extreme.
The calf did not survive.
Taima had successfully given birth to three calves in the park since her own birth there in 1990.
Taima was one of the park’s two pregnant orcas. The other, 32-year-old Katina, is expected to deliver her calf in October. Both whales were impregnated by Tilikum, the orca that drowned a trainer in February.
