John, You are right on many points. I did mention politics mainly because politics influence almost everything in the marketplace and obviously education as well. Why because States create their curriculum and the people who influence that are the elected officials. Obviously if the school board does not do what is "suggested" then they find themselves short on funding. This is true at the Fed level as well. No Child Left Behind... if the students don't pass the tests then the funding gets cut... very simple math. No test scores then no funds... Who determines the score level the SOE - no? So if this is true then how do politics and education not interconnect? You can't teach without funding - true?

Stay focused little kiddies here in the comments. Amazing how a post about the iGeneration even includes comments about politics and yes one expected "blame Bush" comment as well (disappointed it came from you, Patrick). I have news for you there are thousands of adults who can't name the most prominent members of Congress either! Funny how generation after generation, the older population is "scared" of the younger generations. I work at a College and hear the professors talk about the younger kids not knowing how to write, but that they can text all day long. So what! Texting as being commonplace in society is only 5 years old! If your college students can't write you have no one to blame but educators! As stated on SNL..."fix it!" Schools, workplaces, etc. are not really prepared for this new generation. Much the same as when vets returned from WWII and the workplace was not prepared for the vets to enter society. Look at the hippie generation. You want to tell me during the 60's and 70's these "adults" were model citizens? Every generation has issues and new challenges to deal with. Fortunately, this current iGen does have technology to tap into and use to connect to the world.

C Breeze - I guess you might blame the fact that their generations had no one home because of the huge spike in home prices following the Reagan era and the Bush - Silverado S&L fiascoes - Keating 7 -remember? Home prices soared and S&Ls died and they picked up the mortgages for a penny on the dollar. I guess I remember civics and I guess that was quite a lesson - only repeated again with the recent derivative scandal as well.
Also in 1999 the Fed had a surplus the likes of which we have never seen before - remember the clock stopped - that was quickly turned into a deficit during the following 8 years - so who is doing the spending and who put us from surplus to deficit? You may want to do some civics lessons? Who is your teacher? - Palin?

Gen-i may be all those things you ascribe to them, and be termed "international" or "global" to boot;....BUT the fact remains that Gen-i and its predecessor generation has absolutely no knowledge of civics or how our government works nor can they name the most prominent Congressional members....or for that matter heads-of-state from foreign nations. SO,...maybe they're not so lofty as you try to portray them...and by the way, please remind them what their (and THEIR childrens') tax burden is going to be for the rest of their lives because of Obama and his Democratic majority Congresses edicts.
