A motorcyclist was seriously injured after he crashed while he fled from police in East Northport on Wednesday night, Suffolk County police said.
Brian Gins, 36, of Kings Park, was driving his Kawasaki motorcycle southbound on Larkfield Road when he began to illegally ride in the right shoulder as he approached the 5th Avenue intersection at 7:15 p.m., police said.
Gins passed several vehicles, including a Suffolk County police car, and the officers attempted to stop Gins but he sped away, going through a steady red light and turning eastbound on Clay Pitts Road, at which time the officers stopped following him, police said.
A short time later a witness reported to police that they saw Gins lose control of his motorcycle, cross into the westbound lane and then onto the lawn of a Clay Pitts Road home. Gins was thrown from the motorcycle and sustained serious injuries and the motorcycle struck a fence, police said.
Gins was taken by helicopter to Stony Brook University Medical Center and was admitted in critical condition.
He was issued numerous summonses, including driving with a suspended license, speeding, passing on the shoulder, passing a red light, unregistered and uninsured motorcycle and improper registration plates.
Second Squad detectives are continuing the investigation.
