The only issue I take with this article is the alleged “hate crime” that took place at William Floyd High school. The incident in question occurred because the gay student was continually involved in altercations with a female student. The two older boys who assaulted the student were her cousin and brother. This has nothing to do with sexual orientation bias; it would have taken place if the victim was straight.

Kevin, you are correct. Besides homosexuals rapping young boys in ancient times and NAMBLA wanting to legalize it in modern times, homosexism is not about oppression–it’s about tolerance. Straight individuals who object to gay marriage must tolerate heterophobia (i.e., being labeled as a “bigot” or using “hate speech” if they disagree with homosexual marriage). Furthermore, young heterosexuals must tolerate transsexuals in school bathrooms and locker rooms not of the transsexual’s God-given sex. We can only hope that some newspaper would report on this truth.

I graduated from Oceanside High School in 1969 when I was totally in the closet. While I can’t speak for conditions in Long Island high schools today, I have gone to my 35th and 40th year reunions with my husband and without any problems. I am not trying to condone the discrimination we faced in high school, but people do eventually change, grow up, and accept you for what you are.

Rob that story would be pure fiction. Heterosexuals have oppressed gay people across the planet and time. It’s entirely one way; to oppress gay people.

I grew up on Lawn Guy Land myself, but in a less oppressive era (the swinging seventies) and I really feel for these young ones coming up today. Seems as if the pendulum has turned the other way. Glad they at least have Fire Island and NYC so close for some escape and relief.

Let’s hope that there will be a “Growing Up Straight on Long Island” article. Maybe straight youth will mention how they escape homosexism and heterophobia.
