First up, Hyundai’s all-new Equus sedan takes the flagship title from its mid-sized sedan brother the Genesis. It packs an award-winning 4.6-liter, 385-horsepower engine, which Hyundai is proud to point out slightly edges out Lexus’ LS sedan and Mercedes-Benz’s S-Class—that’s what the Equus is aimed to conquer. Despite the high-performance numbers, the Equus ekes out 16 miles per gallon on city streets and 24 on the Northern State Parkway.
On the small-sedan front, a pair of updated Sonatas played wingman to the Equus. The Sonata 2.0T marks Hyundai’s first four-cylinder turbobanger that outputs 274 horsepower and 269 lb.-ft. of torque hooked up to a six-speed automatic with a manumatic option. Gas mileage suffers not, as the 2.0T manages 34 mpg.
The other Sonata introduction is Hyundai’s first hybrid on U.S. shores. The Sonata Hybrid tops the lineups other new sibling with 37 miles per gallon city and 39 highway. That bests Toyota’s Camry Hybrid, Nissan’s Altima Hybrid, Lexus’ HS250h and Ford’s Fusion Hybrid. Motivation comes from a 2.4-liter Theta II engine with a six-speed automatic.
