@crankypaul: There is always risk in an open society. Only totally closed societies have the levels of safety we’ve been led to expect: there was very little crime in the USSR, and there is very little crime in North Korea. “Homeland security” too often means putting a uniform in a public place, which is a waste of money. Furthermore, we are at more risk from crime like this because of the interdependent nature of our lives — I don’t have the time, space, or knowledge to grow everything I consume, do you? If we really wanted to be secure, we’d take steps to make sure our lives were less disruptable.

But I still have questions: pudding mix is cheap, why couldn’t they buy what they wanted? making it from scratch is even cheaper, why couldn’t they do that? And the big one: why did they need that much pudding mix?!?

How many other times have they done this with other products?

I’d like to see their mug shots, why are they not available?

Since nobody got hurt, the incident is almost humorous. However, everyone needs to be aware of something far more important. If two unassuming grey haired people can fool with a few boxes of Jello, what makes anyone feel safe with all the useless “homeland security” that takes place in airports and public places??
