Why is it necessary to distinguish one group from another. All who suffered were human beings.

I take great offense, as my family was hurt terribly in this war. Not just during the war but also for many years afterward.

The term "holocaust" is intended specifically to describe a single group. Whether or not others might be spoken of in this place is irrelevant. The term is in and of itself discriminating and offensive, particularly since this place fails to equally recognize all who suffered.

My own Uncle was killed by the Nazi's for helping people from across the region, escape from Trentino into Switzerland. Where is his story? Where's the story of my mothers family in Belfast, being bombed because the Brits decided to move ship building there? How about the story of how they starved for years after the war, all so that some might live?

Are their stories not worthy of remembrance? Is their no value in their suffering?

if this were a world war II memorial and it only focused on one group of people i would get your point. But it is a holocaust museum that tells the story of the holocaust through a series of rooms--that include every group, not just jews, who were persecuted during the holocaust. I am not jewish. i have a disabled person in my family, disabled people were persecuted during the hospital, as were gays, i take no offense that there isn't a gay and disabled holocaust survivor in this story. i take no offense that there isn't a gay and disabled holocaust survivor at the museum, although those groups are well-represented on the walls of the museum. So as far as i'm concerned wer'e just arguing over what to call the place...which is ridiculous. i see the glass half full, you see the glass half empty. I see similar people getting together to share their experience, you see similar people getting together as an attempt to exclude others. i agree to disagree.

I never said they had to speak for anyone, just remember them as well.

Were all the other groups remembered and your group excluded, I've no doubt you would take offense.

The suffering of WWII doesn't belong to anyone, it belongs to everyone and must be remembered as such.

To do anything less cheapens the suffering of all others.

Who cares what memorials "typically" do? There are no rules in how people deal with their pain. People have a right to honor whomever they choose, end of story. These people are educating people on THEIR experiences they’ve experienced in their own lifetimes or that were told to them by their parents and grandparents because that is what they know, that is their gift to offer the world. They cannot speak for any other persecuted group, they can only tell their stories, and welcome others in to tell theirs, which is exactly what they are doing. To act like they are committing a crime by getting together and organizing because they have something in common, is just insane.

Memorials typically commemorate all those who perished in a given conflict.

What makes you think the Nazi's were any less harsh to any other group?

If you weren't a member of the party, and sometimes if you were; you were their target.

If the mission of this institution is to spread a message of tolerance and respect for all people, they shouldn't be paying lip service to everyone who suffered during World War II by focusing on only one group.

It just isn't right.

Singling out? Give me a break! While we’re at it, let’s just get rid of all those Vietnam memorials. It’s not right, honoring some who died in one battle and not others. So let’s just forget all of the people who spent years in hiding while their entire families were murdered, children who had to learn catholic prayers in other languages and recite them on the spot after getting woken up at 2 a.m. by Nazis, so they wouldn’t be gassed, like their parents…because other people died too.

Hitler sought the extermination of many groups and succeed infamously.

He simply found some groups easier to isolate than others.

But this does not excuse forgetting any other group which was a victim of the German war machine.

To do so, cheapens all of their death.

Is not the purpose of remembrance, to keep alive the knowledge so as to avoid a repeating history?

It is wrong to commemorate any single group and forget all of the rest.

World War II was horrifying to everyone. The war filled the world with suffering. This article singles out only a tiny part of that suffering.

All people must be remembered, or you risk promoting the same ignorance which allowed WWII to occur.

Yes, the story focused on one group of people...the Jewish population. Why? Because Hitler wanted the entire race of Jews exterminated, not just from his country, but from the entire world. Of course, that group of people is going to be the focus because they were the ones targeted for mass genocide.

I'm not going to argue semantics.

If it is so well addressed, why is it called a "Holocaust" museum and not a war memorial? Many people suffered.

Suggesting that any one group had the corner on suffering, is a severe injustice to all those who suffered.

Perhaps I am missing something, but so far as I can tell all featured individuals in this article belong to a single group and are not representative of all who suffered.

Right to arm bears: if you actually read the story/went to the museum you would know that those other 80 million who died are included and well addressed. But assume the worst about everyone, you know, judging by the rest of the comments you make around here, that’s what you do best.

Danny: as human beings we have a responsibility to learn from our mistakes and make the world better. Forgetting the holocaust is just inviting all the hate in the world to form roots. So, forget all you want just hope when that hate comes to fruition, it's not coming for you.
