An inmate committed suicide at Nassau County jail on Sunday evening, Nassau police said.
The victim, a 32-year-old Brooklyn man whose name was not released, had recently been arrested and was incarcerated at the East Meadow facility on “relatively minor charges,” said Detective Lt. Kevin Smith, a Nassau police spokesman.
He the inmate had asked a guard a question and about 15 minutes later the man was found hanging by a bed sheet at 7:15 p.m., Smith said.
Deputy Sheriffs performed CPR and the inmate was taken to Nassau University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, Smith said. Homicide Squad and 3rd Squad detectives investigated. The inmate had passed a psychological evaluation, Smith added.
A spokesperson for the Nassau County Sheriff’s Department did not immediately have any additional information available about the incident.
