The fix to this is simple:

Don't rely on just garnishing the CAR. Get something on these drunk drivers' LICENSES and PASSPORTS and SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS - ANYTHING that can ID these people should label them as drunk drivers who should never, ever, EVER be behind the wheel again.

There are a few things that get me about this whole DWI and confiscation deal. 1. Some guy, on his way home from a party, albeit mildly intoxicated gets hit in the rear by one of two cars drag-racing. The operator does time for that. Does any rational thinking human think that is fair? 2. This same guy is driving a $30k Camry, he bought it outright when a family member left him money. He loses the car. A wildly drunk guy, driving a clunker get pulled over and loses his car, or better, he is driving another 30k Camry on which is a 29k loan. The car goes back to the bank. Again I ask, does any rational thinking human that is fair?

It is tragic when a drunk driver repeats the offense and kills someone. Tougher punishment is the answer. First offenders should get 5 years MANDATORY. REPEAT offenders caught driving drunk should have their legs chopped off (so they can't step on the gas pedal) and their hands chopped off so they can't steer, unless they use their teeth.

While disturbing, this author interviewed all the wrong sources. Campanelli and Montesano have grudges against the County and will say anything to make the County Attorney look bad. Also, Montesano didn't win the Canavan case, he did everything in his power to lose that case. The amicus brief is what caused the Court to overturn the former County statute, not anything that Montesano did or said.

Balto you're right on the mark. Goodman hasn't spoken to the unit in about 3 months? How would she have any idea what's happening? Talk about Tommy Tax giving out a hack job to a crony. There were no attorneys in Nassau capable of doing this job?

Too bad the "drunk-driving" jihad accomplished nothing that might have saved the life of this and other such individuals.

"Toughter" laws haven't changed anything. Every week there is yet another report of deaths and carnage due to drunk driving.

Do you honestly think even "tougher" laws are going to change the behavior of alcohol addicts?

Wake up.

To reduce the DWI carnage, increase either the penalties or the enforcement levels. To increase the enforcement levels, take all the parasites off alcohol enforcement, where they arrest innocent drinkers for being under 21, and put them on DWI enforcement, where they arrest drunk drivers. There is no excuse in the world for imposing the drinking age on an innocent citizen who never consented to it. Also, deregulate alcohol amd legalize wlaking. Stop paving roads without sidewalks and erecting traffic lights without crosswalk lights. Make the world safe for pedestrians. Even if they eliminate underage drinking it wouldn't make the teenagers safe, as you can see at http://udadd.com/memorial.html
