Police are looking for a driver who crashed through a fence and onto railroad tracks, damaging part of the third rail in Wyandanch on the Long Island Railroad’s Ronkonkoma branch early Friday morning.
The driver was apparently driving northbound on Lake Drive and failed to turn where the street ends at Long Island Avenue, drove through a fence and continued another 30’ onto the tracks shortly before 1 a.m., a LIRR spokesman said.
A 20’ length of fence was knocked down and 2,000’ of the third rail was damaged in the crash. Three eastbound and three westbound trains were suspended while workers repaired the damage. Service was restored by 5 a.m.
The car and the driver were not on the scene when Metropolitan Transportation Authority police arrived. Investigators are still searching for the driver.
