The soap opera As the World Turns will end its 54-year-run in September 2010, CBS announced Tuesday. It’s the second daytime drama CBS has canceled in a year, after “Guiding Light.” They were the last two produced by a subsidiary of Procter & Gamble, the Cincinnati-based company for which the term “soap operas” was created because it used the shows to hawk products like Ivory soap and Duz laundry detergent.
Former Today show anchor Bryant Gumbel shocked a television audience with the news that a malignant tumor and part of his lung were removed two months ago. He revealed his condition to Kelly Ripa while subbing for Regis Philbin on Tuesday’s edition of “Live With Regis and Kelly.”

Lady Gaga performed “Speechless” for Queen Elizabeth in Blackpool, England at the Royal Variety Performance. The singer wore a 20-foot red latex cloak and Elizabethan-style ruffle PVC dress. “I wanted to do the suicide scene but was told it wouldn’t be appropriate,” Gaga reportedly said to the UK’s Daily Mail. “But it doesn’t matter because I’m a massive fan of the Queen. I was so excited and have even been practicing my curtsy.”
Gatorade is shutting down production of their Tiger Woods‘ brand as of December 26, but says it has nothing to do with his freshly tarnished reputation.
Carrie Prejean has pulled out of talks to appear at Shrine at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods in January because she refused to appear between midnight and 2 a.m as it was “in direct conflict with her reputation as a Christian.” Carrie’s mother, Francine, wrote in an email, “We are not completely certain that we want her in a nightclub setting at the hours specified in the contract. As you can understand, this is in direct conflict with who she is. Her reputation as a Christian is more important than any public appearance attention or monetary compensation. If in the future, you have an opportunity for her to speak to young adults, or physically challenged athletes, she would love it.”
