A couple and their dog were saved from a house fire in Baldwin early Sunday morning.
The couple was sleeping in the upstairs bedroom of their Tennyson Avenue home when they were awakened by a loud noise coming from the kitchen area and smelled smoke at 3:40 a.m., Nassau police said. The man attempted to go downstairs but was forced back.
He called 911 before the couple escaped out of a bedroom window with their dog onto a rear first story roof of the house. Baldwin Fire Department firefighters arrived, retrieved a ladder from the garage and rescued the couple from the roof.
The couple and their dog were not injured. A third resident in a downstairs bedroom also fled the house unharmed. Firefighters extinguished the flames, which caused extensive damage to the house.
Arson/Bomb Squad detectives determined the fire to be accidental.
