A Shirley man was charged with bribery after he offered an officer free services at his business if the officer did not arrest him for drunken driving on Thursday night, Suffolk police said.
Selective Alcohol Enforcement Team (SAFE-T) Officer Robert Kall pulled over Joseph Lavelle, 44, and arrested him for driving while intoxicated at around 8:30 p.m., according to 7th Squad detectives.
During the traffic stop, and again while being taken to the Seventh Precinct, Lavelle offered the officer free oil changes and motor vehicle inspections at his place of business if the officer did not charge him with DWI, police said.
Lavelle was charged with DWI and bribery. He will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Friday.
