People are moving out of Long Island by the thousands a month, because of the high real estate taxes we pay. School tax makes up over sixty percent of the real estate taxes we pay. I think and income tax would be a fair way to fund our schools, the same as New York City. We need to stop targeting homeowners to fund the schools. Our young adults, retired people and everyone in between can not afford this anymore. So when will our elected officials start working for us. Eliminate the school tax!

I hear every Longislander Tax Blues comments; we are being sniped from everywhere, they continue milking the Nassau County Cow to no end, and yes Ed is up for the job, I have a bit a faith on him. But we really need is a “Benevolent Tyrant” to cut to the chase. He’d surely start with the retirement accounts from the school districts we are ‘maintaining’ by eliminating the School Taxes all together. While we are thinking of how we are going to afford the bills, the folks over the ‘schools’ are planning where to take a next cruise this Winter with our ‘extorted guaranty’ tax money…
At least the people in China know what they are up against. What about us?

Not a bad post, Batman, but a sales tax would be even more effective than an income tax if you really want to get everyone to chip in and contribute to the education cost burden. Other states are already using sales taxes to fund school costs.

Nassau County resident’s at least those that took the time to vote, should give themselves a pat on the back, they voted in and for checks and balances. For sure concerened people will be sattisfied to know that there will be a CE in office that will keep both feet in Mineola and work on the pressing issues at hand.

It will take a tremendous ammount of work to right the ill’s that face homeowner’s and business owners alike. Those that paid attention and took action need to continue their engagement and stay involved

The shame is that’s it’s a combination of things. School tax, property tax, etc. It isn’t all tied into the County budget but hopefully in Ed we now have someone who understands these issues and will address everything in his power to stablise and couteract these increases. The biggest issue the County faces is increased revenue and that is primarily sales tax revenue and efficient cost cutting in government. Once we do get a preoject like the Lighthouse moving, it will further increase the sales tax base….forget a new home for the Islanders as the focal point. A Lighthouse project in either it’s original proposal or a scaled down version will increase revenue and provide much needed jobs.

Yeah Ed’s got his work cut out for him but i do believe he’s up to the job.

My tax bill went up 50% because of my local school board and GOP-leaning district voters, not Nassau County taxes! The only real way to level the playing field is to drop property taxes for schools and replace with income taxes. When we start having all the illegal apartment dwellers start paying into the school budgets, the overall cash pool will increase which will LOWER my overall payments in the long run. My income has been flat for 5+ years, yet my school tax payment has gone up exponentially over that period. An income tax would have kept money in my pocket until my income went up again.

Great question Ray… However remember David Dinkins and what “community policing” really is? it’s zero police enforcement and do nothing stuff. Thats helped turn all of NYC into a killing zone.
The NCPD is still doing a great job with all the staffing cuts, seemed Suozzi cut alot of things, except giving very high paying do nothing made up jobs to “700 of Suozzi’s NYC hacks and cronies” Thats alot of nassau county tax payer’s money going to people who do not live here. Thats a total waste, After 10 days of Suozzi and total Democrat control, I’m glad to see them out. I just hope the new guys do alot better job then him. One then for sure Liberal Newsday will be doing story after story about any mistake’s the Republican’s make. Newsday and News 12 seem more like a Nassau County Democrat press release machine, and not news reporters.

People learn the facts it is not Suozzi that raises your property taxes. The County portion is only 18% of your property taxes. The bulk of the expense is school over 50% and the rest is state. How is he going to raise 50% of your taxes if he only controls 18% of it? What is he to do fire all police officers, parks, sanitation to lower another ~5-10%?

At least Suozzi had a plan for lowering taxes, Mangano which was basically elected on a mandate to lower property taxes is not going to be able to do a thing other than fire cops…. I am sure everyone will love that.

If voters had taken the time to read his site ( or lack of content there ) he did not propose one thing to help lower taxes or get the county government more fiscally sound other than firing a few cabinet posts at the county level which would only amount to less than 50 million. A drop in the bucket.

Nassau County was only a stepping stone. That said, Simon& Garfunkel put it best “anyway you look at it, you loose.”

Mangano’s aspirations? Who knows? Lower taxes – good luck with that guys. Will never happen.

Donenick…your right..Gulotta was a crook and a waste. Nothing but a party hack who looted the County with political favors. However Suozzi has also continually raised taxes…far more than Gulotta ever did and cut basic county services in the process. Start with the NCPD budget. Suozzi put in the cameras to generate revenue. What he didn’t tell the voter was he cut the NCPD budget whereby they are understaffed and each precinct’s enforcement unit was eliminated. How do I know this? Simple. Local residents where I live met with the precinct commander to demand enforcement on a dangerous roadway in the community and that was the response given to us by the commmander. We then contacted politicians who gave the same response. Lo and behold Monday there were two accidents on the roadway…..a 1/4 mile stretch. Yesterday there was a marked car doing enforcement. Why? Because there’s no money to do community policing. The NCPD is forced to react AFTER a death or injury occurs. So where did all my tax increases go if my services have been reduced?

Sorry, but don’t whine about Gulotta…throw Suozzi in there with him. I live in Ed’s district and he’s no Gulotta nor is anything like Suozzi. What he is happens to be very dedicated, aspiring to nothing more than the job he was elected to and determined to run the County the correct way. If he does somehow fail, it won’t be due to corruption or a lack of dedication. Nassau will be very surprised to find out they elected a very capable man who will make a difference for all of us.

A last whimper from Tom “it’s not my fault” Suozzi.
Blame the very people who voted him into office, the democratic voter, on loseing this election! The gall of this person. ( I can’t call him a man because a man would have stepped up a taken the blame)
Nassau county will be a LOT better off with out this loser. 19.5% tax hike times 8 years and still no relief from the deficiet in Nassau County. I guess losing all 700 of Suozzi’s NYC hacks and cronies do nothing jobs might help just a little. I hope so. Good luck Ed. This knucklehead left you with a real mess.

Hey Dom, I guess you have not looked at your tax bill in the last 10 yrs of total Democrat control ? a little hint its up over 50% and now with red light cams at even other traffic light, handing out $50 fine’s at the drop of a hat. People are sick & tired of all the same old. It does not matter what party is running the show. Suozzi his the nerve to blame poor Democrat voter turn out for his lost ! No Sir, him and Mr Weitzman were both kicked out of office for the “poor job they both did”. Peroid !!! DA Rice a Democrat was voted back in correct??? Why? To Joe Caffera: Voting down the School Budget will not reduce taxes, as long as the Boards can implement Austerity Budgets that are so close in spending to the defeated budgets. And did you know that if the Boards take a hard line in contract negotiations that there is no risk to the Union members to work without a contract? By NYS law, all of the previously negotiated annual raises and salary steps continue? So attempting rollbacks or requesting givebacks from the teachers is useless and futile.

Lets change the laws to put the taxpayers on a level playing field with the Unions. Right now, we’re running uphill.

You are right. But we only vote on a fraction of the total school budget. So we can’t tell schools to fire unneded superintendents, or to stop buying new computers every year, or to spend like there’s no tomorrow.

I vote “no” anyway, but either way the school taxes always go up.

The County should absolutely take over the school districts – it would save Nassau County taxpayers MILLIONS OF DOLLARS EVERY YEAR.

Mangano better make this a reality if he has any hope of living up to his own campaign slogan…
