Nassau police are seeking the public’s help as the investigation continues into a fatal hit-and-run motorcycle crash in Franklin Square on Sunday morning.
John Deiker, 46, of Franklin Square was driving his Honda motorcycle northbound on Commonwealth Street when he was struck by an unknown motor vehicle driving eastbound on Naple Avenue. at about 11:46 a.m. Police are now hunting the driver who fled the scene.
When officers arrived on scene, Deiker was found in the middle of the street suffering from serious injuries and was taken to Franklin General Hospital, where he died about an hour later.
“At this point, police are attempting to locate the individual who possibly struck Mr. Deiker,” said Homicide Squad Detective Sgt. John DeMartinis, who spoke to reporters on Monday. Investigators determined the car to be a 1991-1996 Buick Century.
Police have said that it is unclear as to how many occupants were in the vehicle, but confirmed that Deiker wasn’t wearing a motorcycle helmet at the time of the crash. Demartinis said that police were not establishing alcohol, excessive speed, or roadway conditions as factors in the crash until further evidence was analyzed.
