Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi says the results of a recount that has him in a virtual deadlock with his Republican challenger should be known soon.
The two-term incumbent Democrat who once ran for governor said at a press conference Monday that nearly a month after Election Day he trails county legislator Edward Mangano by 213 votes.
That’s a turnaround from initial vote totals that had Suozzi leading by 237 votes out of more than 200,000 cast.
Suozzi says the recount could be finished shortly, then several hundred disputed paper ballots will be presented to a judge later this week.
He says he is not inclined to back a request by some of his supporters who want him to seek an entirely new election because of possible vote discrepancies.
