Suffolk Man Arrested for Mortgage Loan Scam

by Jaclyn Gallucci on November 20, 2009

checkA Smithtown man was arrested Thursday after taking thousands from a North Bellmore woman in an attempted mortgage loan scam, Nassau Police said.

The 56-year-old woman received a postcard advertising a mortgage modification for her home. She contacted the number and met with 58-year-old John Euler in August, then wrote two checks to him, totaling $3,000 for a partial advance payment fee, according to investigators. The checks were cashed but the victim did not receive any paperwork for the loan all attempts and all of her attempts to contact Euler went unanswered, police said.

Euler surrendered himself and is charged with possession of a forged instrument, grand larceny and criminal impersonation.
