A Valley Stream man with one DWI conviction already on his record has been sentenced to seven-to-21 years in prison after admitting he was drunk when he killed a driver in a head-on crash.
Persi Esquivel pleaded guilty in Nassau County Court in September to charges including aggravated vehicular homicide and aggravated DWI. He also violated the terms of his probation from a 2006 DWI conviction by removing a court-ordered ignition interlock device from his car.
Prosecutors say Esquivel crossed a double-yellow line divider in Farmingdale last November, slamming into a car driven by 21-year-old Jason Shein of Levittown.
Shein was home for Thanksgiving break from the University of Miami.
Prosecutors say Esquivel’s blood-alcohol reading was triple the legal limit of 0.08.
