A retired New York City police sergeant who was convinced his Long Island home was being invaded has surrendered after opening fire inside the house.
Nassau County police say that the homeowner fired a number of shots inside his Elmont house early Saturday morning after instructing his wife, stepdaughter and a tenant to leave.
Officers responding to a 911 call found the 64-year-old barricaded in the house on Bauer Court.
Detective Sgt. Anthony Repalone says that that negotiators were able to gain the man’s trust. The standoff ended about 3 p.m.
The man was taken to a hospital for an evaluation.
Police did not identify him and no criminal charges are expected to be filed.
Police say the man had a license for the gun that he used.
