what i like about pitchfork reviews is, they steer me towards the good quality stuff in the genres i like. sure they have a reputation for being snobby, but even when we get a classic, like the recent animal collective record, the gushing is kept at a minimum. there are certain clue words and phrases in each review for me, so that even if it isn't the best review, i might still go check the artist out, and might still like the release. cluewords for me are mbv, 4ad, gbv, pixies. if they say "mbv" in a review, no matter how bad the rating, it's an automatic buy for me. most importantly, pitchfork helps steer me towards new genres i would never seek out on my own, and they do all the digging for me since radio and mtv have been dead since long before pitchfork existed.
