A Plainview man drowned Saturday after his boat took on water near Fort Salonga.
Suffolk police said a call came in at around 9:45 p.m. reporting four people in the Long Island Sound needing assistance. Marine Bureau officers responded to the scene where they found three men and one woman were fishing in a 10-foot boat when it began to take on water.
A passing canoeist assisted the three of them back to shore, but one man did not make it, according to Homicide Squad detectives.
The Suffolk County Police Dive Team recovered the body of the 20-year-old victim at 2:05 a.m. Sunday morning.
Investigators are seeking the identity of the canoeist who assisted the group, and anyone who may have witnessed the incident while an autopsy will be conducted to determine the victim’s cause of death. Police will not release the identities until the family has been notified.
