Jeff Goldberg makes phones ring. As a sales trainer and inspirational speaker, he spends his hours helping companies get better results from sales reps. His words are often the cornerstone of change for people personally and professionally, and after many years in sales and then in training, he felt confident he could impart his experience and wisdom on others and help them be better. For many years, he was sought after and successful in that mission.
But in that time, he never really had to put his theories and techniques into practice. Companies called him; he did the job and he did it well. But when the economy tanked last year, Goldberg was faced with an interesting challenge. His office was the quietest he had ever seen it, worse than in 2001 after the September 11 attacks. His phones, like millions of others, stopped ringing.
“It was very quiet,” says Goldberg, owner of Jeff Goldberg and Associates. “And I realized that I needed to do what I teach people to do. I had to start doing the things I teach.”
Goldberg is definitely a people person. He’s affable and full of energy. It’s not difficult to see why he succeeds in his line of work. Based in Long Beach, Goldberg is a former stand-up comedian who also has theater experience. All of this experience could not fully prepare him for the economic crush that has befallen the business industry. But he was up to the challenge. He hit the phones like he hadn’t in a long time. And he made things happen.
The experience also helped him see something important. “In this economy, companies should invest in their sales force. Make sure they are equipped to succeed as things improve,” says Goldberg. “You have to give them the advantage.”
He has seen companies tighten their budgets, but now is no time to duck and cover when it comes to sales. The time to get better is now.
“Sales people’s skills should be honed to a fine edge,” says Goldberg. And networking is key. “I constantly plant seeds,” he says.
The seed you plant now may take two to three years to grow, but it can and will, given the right attention, Goldberg says. It’s all about attitude and preparation. “The right activity almost always has the right results,” he says.
Despite the doom and gloom about the economy, Goldberg thinks that we live in inspiring times. President Obama, he says, is a breath of fresh air, and suddenly, “Anything is possible.”
