The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flash flood alert for Suffolk County until 4:15 p.m. Wednesday. As the threat of increased thunderstorms increases across the county, officials are warning of the possibility of heavy rains which could cause flash floods.
“Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and low lying spots,” said the NWS in a press release.
Drivers are warned not drive vehicles into areas where the water covers the roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely. Move to higher ground. The NWS most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Officials warn to never drive a vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway since flood waters are usually deeper than they appear.
“Just one foot of flowing water is powerful enough to sweep vehicles off the road,” said the NWS. “When encountering flooded roads make the smart choice. Turn around. Dont drown.”
