Some 45 percent of Americans believe that children are in foster care due to juvenile delinquency—but most foster kids are actually victims of neglect, abandonment or abuse. The focus of Little Flower’s effort during National Adoption Month is finding parents to guide and love hard-to-place teenagers ages 13 through 21, which make up more than a third of those in local foster care.

Fireworks are primarily used on the Fourth of July and at Disneyworld—but here we are on LI in winter, so the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County (GSSC) are brightening the night with their annual Holiday Light Show. Enliighten things even more with 3-D glasses provided by the GSSC, the largest council in New York State. The largest youth-serving agency on LI serves more than 43,000 girls and 9,000 adult volunteers.

To help those in need, the young members of Teens As Leaders (TAL) at Mid-Island Y Jewish Community Center (MIYJCC) will collect and deliver food and necessities to the frail elderly of Plainview-Old Bethpage. The nonsectarian effort seeks scarves and gloves (used or new), new blankets and toiletries, and nonperishable food items. The teens are also coordinating a Chesed (Acts of Kindness) Toy Drive, gathering new, unwrapped toys to distribute to Ohel Children’s Home and Family Services. The public is invited to drop off toys or necessities at the MIYJCC or mail a check to the Mid-Island Y JCC.
